Scholarships in Australia
Overview
Australia provides many scholarships to international students through government programs and individual universities. Education in Australia is not cheap – however, the government and universities invest heavily in scholarships to attract talent. Australian scholarships often target students from the Asia-Pacific region and developing countries, but there are also global merit scholarships.
Australian Government Scholarships
Fully funded scholarships for students from selected developing countries (primarily in Asia, the Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East) to undertake full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study in Australia. AAS cover everything: full tuition, a return airfare, an establishment allowance for setup costs, health insurance, and a regular living stipend for the duration of the degree. The scholarship also includes extra support like introductory preparatory programs and covers any necessary pre-course English training. Recipients are expected to return home after finishing (there's a requirement to leave Australia for at least 2 years after graduation, or repay the cost). These are prestigious and competitive, aimed at 'future leaders'.
A federal government program that funds both domestic and international research students (mostly PhD and research Master's), administered by Australian universities. An RTP typically provides full tuition coverage for the duration of the research degree and a tax-free living allowance (approximately AUD $29,000–$30,000 per year). Many universities also include an overseas student health cover and small relocation allowances. Often the top applicants to PhD programs are automatically offered RTP funding — check each university's graduate funding page for details.
Destination Australia Scholarships
Government initiative to encourage students to study at regional (non-metropolitan) institutions.
Australian University Scholarships
Australian universities offer a wealth of scholarships to attract international talent.
University of Melbourne International Scholarships
UniMelb offers Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarships (partial fee waivers of AUD $10,000 up to full tuition for top incoming undergrads) and Graduate Research Scholarships which cover full tuition and provide a living stipend for graduate research students (often via RTP). Melbourne also has the Melbourne International Research Scholarship and specific faculty-based awards. It's one of Australia's most well-funded universities for international students.
University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS)
The USydIS is a competitive award for PhD and Master's by research students at the University of Sydney. It covers full tuition and provides a generous annual stipend, making it one of Australia's more lucrative research scholarships. Sydney also has the Sydney Scholars Awards for undergraduates and participates in Australia Awards for eligible international students.
Monash International Leadership Scholarship
Monash University offers two key international scholarships: the International Merit Scholarship (AUD $10,000 per annum) and the International Leadership Scholarship, which covers 100% of tuition for outstanding students. Monash also offers faculty-specific awards, such as Engineering International Excellence. The university actively recruits global talent and has one of Australia's largest scholarship pools for international applicants.
UNSW Scientia PhD Scholarship
The Scientia PhD Scholarship at UNSW Sydney is one of Australia's most prestigious and generous doctoral awards. It provides a full tuition fee waiver plus a living stipend significantly above the standard rate. Recipients also receive career development funds and access to a strong research community. UNSW similarly offers International Scholarships ranging from $5,000 up to full tuition awards for undergraduate students.
University of Adelaide Global Excellence Scholarship
For international undergrad/postgrad students at the University of Adelaide.
Tips & Notes
- International students can work part-time (up to 48 hours per fortnight during term) and full-time in vacations.
- Australia's Post-Study Work Visa allows you to stay and work after graduation.
- Most undergraduate scholarships are partial tuition waivers (20-50%). Fully-funded undergrad awards are rare.
- At the postgraduate level, research students have more full-funding opportunities via RTP and university fellowships.
